Dan Kelch, an Army retiree, and his family moved to Salado, Texas in 2014 when he was assigned to Fort Hood. Dan has lived all over the county and always had an interest in the outdoors and birds, but, when he moved to Texas, it placed him in the migratory bird central flyway. This is where he saw his first Painted Bunting — his spark bird — which turned him into a serious birder.
Dan turned his family’s small yard into a mini bird sanctuary where he has documented over 150 species of birds over the past decade. The highlight for his yard is when ornithologists from Fort Hood began a Painted Bunting banding program in his yard in 2022. They banded and documented over 100 Painted Buntings in just one day during the first year of the program.
In 2015 Dan became a member of Twin Lakes Audubon Society (TLAS) here in Bell County and now he is currently the President of the Society. Dan is an active participant in birding activities such as the Great Backyard Bird Count in Bell County and Fort Hood, the annual Birding Classic at Mother Neff State Park, the Audubon Global Big Day, and various Earth Day celebrations.
